A Well-Drawn Statuary Marble Chimneypiece of Neoclassical Design

An English neoclassical antique fireplace of statuary and coloured marble. The breakfront moulded shelf with inlaid dental moulding. The frieze centred with a white plaque sculpted with a winged cupid (Greek Eros, God of love) fast asleep (in an Arcadian pastoral scene), on a tassled pillow, his bow and arrow beside him. The side panels with a double Greek key inlaid in coloured marble. The flanking blocks sculpted with tripod urns decorated with rams heads from which fall inverted flowers. The pilaster panelled jambs with falling arabesques centred with female and male portrait heads in roundels; suggesting that this chimneypiece was commissioned to celebrate a marriage.
