A Robust George II Statuary and Sienna Chimneypiece, after William Kent

A George II statuary and Sienna marble antique fireplace after a William Kent (1685–1748) design, carved with a fabulous Aurora mask. The moulded shelf protruding in the centre and over the jambs. The frieze is centred with a well carved mask of Aurora, the personification of dawn, (Gk. Eos) who flew across the sky announcing the arrival of the sun, and here symbolises the coming pleasures of the evening and night. This is flanked by panels of richly veined and coloured Sienna marble. The statuary pilaster jambs on Sienna background carved with inverted flowering husks of flowers and are capped with fluted scrolling brackets. The opening with egg and dart (good and evil), mirroring those on the shelf; the whole raised on foot blocks. With restoration and adaptions, 18th century and later.
