A Pair of Oak Side Tables by Peter Waals, After a Design by Ernest Gimson, Early 20th Century

Of refined, late Arts and Crafts design, these tables have an elegance and form that complements the dry, rich surface of the timber. Eightsided legs support frame tops, each containing two inset panels.

Made by Peter Waals (30 January 1870 - May 1937) to a design by Ernest Gimson (21 December 1864 - 12 August 1919). Gimson perhaps one of the best-known exponents of the English Arts and Crafts movement, was called by Pevsner "the greatest of the English architect-designers". Peter Waals was born in the Hague, and travelled to England, where he met Gimson in 1901; the pair worked together closely until Gimson's death in 1919.
