A Set of Eighteen George III and George III Style Chippendale Chairs

A fine suite of eighteen chairs, comprising a pair of armchairs and six side chairs of 18th century date and ten later copies made for Frank Partridge in the early 20th century to match and extend the set. The chairs with sophisticated Gothick backs in the mid 18th century Chippendale taste and with blind fretwork to the front legs which terminate in square Marlborough toes. The front seat rails are serpentine, matching the curvature of the head rails.

Comparative Literature:

Side chairs of the same model, possibly without the blind fretwork on the legs, are illustrated in Herbert Cescinsky's English Furniture of the Eighteenth Century, Vol. II., p.234 fig. 243, the property of A. R. Stilwell Freeland, a famous collector of the time who lived in Embankment Gardens, Chelsea.

An armchair with the same backs as our suite but with a different pattern used on the front legs is illustrated in Percy MacQuoid's Age of Mahogany, p.298, fig. 686, the property of Weedon Grossmith (1854-1919), the actor and writer, co-author of The Diary of a Nobody.
A Side chair with very similar back splat as our model but with simple H-stretcher bottom is illustrated in Oliver Brackett's 'An Encyclopaedia of English Furniture: a Pictorial Review of English Furniture from Gothic Times to the Mid-Nineteenth Century', p.211.

The carvers measuring 63cm wide, 99cm high, and 64cm deep.
Seat height is approximately 48cm.
