A Regency Black and Siena Marble Chimneypiece
A 19th century English chimneypiece carved in black marble, with Siena marble inlays of the highest quality on the jambs and frieze, and a double centrally mirrored Greek key as central tablet in black marble and precious Jasper. A notable moulding over the opening echoes the moulding of the above shelf.
The radical modernism of this composition recalls the work of the architect Sir John Soane (1753-1837), who was known for developing an abstract version of the Neoclassical style.
