A Fine Neoclassical early 19th century Statuary and Siena Marble Chimneypiece.
A George III style chimneypiece of excellent quality, carved in white statuary marble with Siena marble veneers. The elegant moulded breakfront shelf is supported by the frieze with a wide central tablet, carved with a Classical urn at centre flanked by lions and arabesque foliage at either side. Bell-flower garlands decorate the rest of the frieze. Flower chains are present also on the jambs, that terminate with a half Ionic capital with acanthus leaves.
The lightness and refinement of the decorative elements recall the style of the Neoclassical architect Robert Adam, as shown in one of his drawings here below.
