An impressive 19th Century Continental chimneypiece carved in Rouge de Rance marble. Featuring a distinctive shouldered arch opening that rises in the centre before returning to its vertical, heavily moulded jambs, the whole resting on square footblocks. Scrolling foliage and festoons of flowers are intricately carved onto the corner spandrels. The Rouge de Rance marble is heavily and evenly figured bringing further animation to the design.

The use of Rouge de Rance marble was very much diffused in France during the 18th and 19th century, however the design of the present chimneypiece recalls the fireplace in one of the saloni of Palazzo Pisani Moretta on the Gran Canal in Venice.
