Chatham

A pollard oak console table in the late Regency tradition. The rectangular top with squared edge above a conforming frieze, the octagonal tapered front legs with ring turned, moulded collars and with squared back supports untied by a platform stretcher. The elegant simplicity of this small console table reflects the early designs of Thomas King published in The Modern Style of Cabinet Work Exemplified, first published in 1835.Pollard oak is found at, or near the base of some trees as well as from naturally diseased timbers. It also occurs when trees are pollarded, or cut back on a regular basis; the cutting produces the distinctive markings.
