A Large 17th Century Oil on Canvas of an Imaginary Palace, Northern European School
Of substantial scale, and intricate perspective, this depiction of a palatial, colonnaded edifice reflects the fashion, among Northern European painters of the 16th and 17th centuries, for depicting elaborate capriccios, incorporating classical and baroque elements.
Very similar in style to works by Hamburg-based Gabriel Engels (1592-1654), this example can be attributed Engels. Comparison can also be made with works by the great Dutch painter Pieter Nieefs the Elder (c. 1578-c.1660). The work reflects, most likely, a collaboration between a landscape painter and another artist, responsible for the 'staffage', or figures, in the composition.
