An 19th Century Set of Plaster Impressions of the Elgin Marbles, after John Henning the Elder, in a Rosewood Frame

A collection of cast plaster relief tablets, replicating the frieze of the Parthenon, known as the Elgin Marbles. Of crisp, lively quality, and in a distressed rosewood frame, the impact is striking, the condition untouched.

Scottish carver John Henning (Paisley, 1771- London, 1851) was greatly inspired by the Parthenon frieze, which arrived in London in in the eary 19th century and were transferred to the British Museum in 1816. He devoted much of his life to variously producing moulds and copies of the frieze, including a half-size version which adorns the Athenaeum.

Many subsequent copies were made, of Henning's work, of varying quality.
