A Large-Scale Early-18th Century Carved Cartouche
Of exceptional scale and impact, the central medallion bears the cypher 'E A R', adorned with grotesque masks and exuberant scrolling.
The surface retaining much original parcel gilding, pleasingly in contrast to the dry surface of the pine and walnut timbers used.
Apparently English, but closely following the Italian grotesque tradition expounded by designers such as Federico Zuccaro.
Provenance
With the dealer J. Rochelle Thomas in 1922, who advertised it in The Connoisseur as one of 'two Shields, with monograms, 50 inches in height' along with a carved ribbon section dated 1707, as shown below.
