A Mid 18th Century Chinese Export Black and Gilt Lacquer Coffer on Stand
Statuesquely poised, the lacquer dark and richly gilded with fantastical scenes, depicting the hunting of mythical beasts.
The stand is robust, with strongly formed S-shaped front legs and tapering square rear legs, sparingly decorated with foliate and avian motifs. The trunk lid opening to reveal a beautifully aged, red-painted interior. The brass hardware displaying a delicate incised decoration, a Chinese interpretation of English escutcheons and handles.
Chinese export furniture is particularly valued for the quality of its lacquer decoration, along with the essential romance and interest of its origins. A chest of this kind would most likely have transported precious spices, tea, and other Chinese exports.
