A Late 17th Century Japanese Gilt Lacquered Cabinet, on Later English Stand

The surface overall incredibly rich and in dry, un-restored condition, with gilt floral and rustic decoration on the doors, and an excellent, finely wrought escutcheon, with upside down key, typical of this form and period. On a later, English base, c. 1740. The doors, with excellent gilt brass hinges, open to reveal a quite breathtakingly well-preserved array of draws, all lacquered and gilded and essentially preserved by their seclusion and reflecting an apparent lack of interference in three centuries. Of particular note is the extremely dry, monochrome design on the interior of the doors, a sleepy, original surface. The metal decoration on the doors, incorporated into the gilding, adds another layer of interest.

The base likely later. Similar cabinets can be found in great houses throughout the British Isles, such as those at Kingston Lacey, Saltram, and even 11 Downing Street, all of which are raised on ebulliently carved giltwood stands. The George I japanned base upon which it sits lends a lightness overall which is delightful, whilst retaining excellent proportion and sleepy, refined presence.
