Dating from c. 1890, this large scale carpet is typical of the Mahal form, carpets produced in small-scale village workshops in Northwest Persia. Exuberant palmettes and foliate designs, in russet red and cobalt blue, with two larger motifs in pleasing ochre, on a clear, pale ground. Enclosed within a bold brick red border, itself decorated with pinwheels, palmettes, and crescent leaves.
