A mid 18th Century mahogany Gainsborough chair, of broad and low proportions, with shaped stop rail and magnificently carved arms depicting sabre-toothed beasts, with carved lion masks to the robustly shaped leg, terminating in hair paw feet. The back leg of particular note, adding a sculptural stance and emphasised rake, with overall dry and gentle surface patina. Upholstered to calico covering, for further upholstery on request.

Provenance:
Sold at Parke Bernet, 27th of March 1943, achieving the highest price in the sale of $875, as part of the retirement sale of the great American furniture dealer, Daniel Farr.
