A Late Regency Carrara Marble Chimneypiece
An English chimneypiece from circa 1830, carved in Carrara marble in the Italian style. Dramatic S-scroll jambs faced with acanthus uphold deeply projecting corner blocks carved with paterae. The frieze is centred by a third patera from which bell flowers emerge, carved in high relief. Acanthus symbolises enduring life, while the bell flowers evoke natural beauty and themes of love. This design reflects a late Georgian taste for sculptural depth and continental influence.
