An Art Deco Roman Baixas Breccia Marble Chimneypiece
A compact Art Deco chimneypiece of bold geometric form, carved in Roman Baixas Breccia marble. The overscale frieze features three wide recessed reeds, while the stepped shelf echoes motifs found in Deco design. The jambs are similarly adorned with these submerged reeds. Art Deco, emerging in the 1920s, celebrated an industrial aesthetic. The detailing that we see here highlights the periods enjoyment of symmetry, and a more radical architectural language.
