A superb George III style Statuary marble chimneypiece inlaid with Siena and Jasper.
The distinctive central tablet is a fine demonstration of drapery carving, the sense of weight and gravity of the cloak as it falls across the Roman campana urn, and the variation of the depth of relief to convey perspective, is carved at a depth normally associated with earlier Palladian chimneypieces. The interplay of opulent European materials, veneered S cut Jasper marble in the inground and inlaid convent Siena marble to the Greek Key frieze above, also displays a mastery of technique. The corner blocks are carved with classical wine ewers, above pilaster jambs carved with filled flutes, on footblocks.
