A Louis XVI Style White Marble Chimneypiece with Acanthus Legs and Laurel Leaf Frieze
A rare English Statuary white marble chimneypiece, richly carved in the Louis XVI style. Ebullient acanthus leaves over tapering bell flower filled stop-flutes adorn the jambs. The well-proportioned frieze centres a finely worked wreath of laurel on a fielded panel, and the corner blocks are inlaid with rosettes. The chimneypiece's overall shallow projection, indicative of the architectural scale of Georgian interiors, bellies its intrinsic Englishness. Provenance: Eaton Square, Baroness Rawling.
