A 17th Century Breccia Marble Chimneypiece with Pietra Dura Inlays

A 17th Century small-scale Italian chimneypiece carved in Breccia Pernice, with Pietra Dura inlays of Verde Antico forming quatrefoil details. The frieze and shelf are carved in the solid, and the serpentine bolection moulding terminates in bun feet mirrored at the jamb tops. Quatrefoils, symbolic of harmony and balance, were popular in Renaissance and Gothic revival design. The use of rare stones and intricate inlay reflects the 19th century's fascination with craftsmanship and decorative complexity.
