Regency

N320 (Sold)

A Regency Chimneypiece by Sir John Soane in Carrara Marble and Welsh Slate.

Originally from Pell Wall Hall in Market Drayton, Shropshire. The overall proportions are of very unusual diminutive scale, indicative of a bedroom chimneypiece. Soane constructed Pell Wall Hall after improvements were made under his supervision at 10 Downing Street, and it is likely he re-proportioned his design for that scheme for a secondary space at Pell Wall. It was Soane’s final residential commission, completed in 1828. In 1986 the house was severely damaged in a fire.
