I197

An Italian Renaissance style Pietra Serena chimneypiece, the cornice shelf above a solid carved frieze, centred by a Roman coin carved with a 15th century Renaissance style portrait relief with the subject depicted as Caesar. The portrait is in the manner of Giovanni Antonio Amadeo, a High Renaissance sculptor who worked predominantly in Milan and Pavia. This is supported by flanking Centaurs emerging from richly carved arabesque Acanthus and floral foliage. The frieze is upheld by crouching sphinxes, above full Corinthian columns carved with intertwining vines and winged cherubim, on turned socle bases.
