A George III Carrara and Spanish Brocatello antique fireplace. The mantlepiece with deep moulded edge and dentil-inlaid band breaking over the end blocks. The flute-inlaid frieze centred by a bold protruding Brocatello tablet applied with a delicately carved white marble fluted roman-urn with swag-draped sphinx handles, flanked by elongated end-blocks boldly carved with writhen-snake handles and strigilated bodies on gently tapering flute-inlaid jambs. English, circa 1770.
This chimneypiece with exaggerated end blocks depicting classical vases, reflecting the zeitgeist of the late 18th century and the preoccupation with the discoveries from the ancient world of Roman Amphorae. For more information see Vasemania by Stephanie Walker.
