A 19th century Gothic revival chimneypiece of broad landscape proportions carved in Carrara marble. The curved arched gothic opening is bordered with elegant mouldings, with carved scallop shells and trailing acanthus leaves carved in the spandrels. The shell was a sign of fertility and was associated with the goddess Venus (Aphrodite), goddess of love and beauty.
