An Extremely Fine George III Neoclassical Chimneypiece in Statuary Marble and Irish Fossil Marble

An extremely fine George III neoclassical chimneypiece in statuary marble with contrasting Irish Fossil marble veneers in the fluted frieze and jambs, with trompe l’oeil dentils in the moulded shelf. The frieze is centred by a Pietra Dura motif of bell flowers hanging from a ring, in Rosso Antico marble and Belgium Black. The corner blocks are carved with Roman Campana urns terminating in socle lids, with ram head handles, draped with vine leaves, a motif popularised in the Adam period of the 1780s and 1790s.
