An Arresting Late 18th Century Neoclassical Chimneypiece, with Geometric Portoro Nero Design

A late 18th century, neoclassical English antique marble fireplace, inlaid with contrasting Portoro Nero marble. Circa 1795.

With moulded shelf breaking forward and protruding over the jambs. The frieze is centred with a tablet of choice specimen black and gold marble, flanked by panels of inlaid marbles applied in an attractive geometric design and at the ends with blockings decorated with circular floral paterae which are upheld by the pilaster jambs of tapering, fluted inverted shaped obelisks capped with rectangular dies decorated with circular Portoro marble roundels. The opening framed by panels of black Irish Fossil marble sandwiched between statuary mouldings.
