An impressive mid-19th century, English fireplace. With rectangular shelf upheld by two large and well carved eagles with furled wings, preening themselves and standing on globes. The eagle was an attribute of Jupiter and was also the ancient symbol of power and victory. The frieze is centred with another eagle perched on a swag of victory laurel flanked by scrolling foliage and two fleeing dragons. The whole fireplace upheld by foot blocks.
